“Building Character through Art” Contest Rules

v  The nIc Foundation art contest is open to students in grades K-12 attending public, private, and parochial school in one of the 16 listed Wisconsin counties:  Brown, Calumet, Door, Fond Du Lac, Green Lake, Kewaunee, Manitowoc, Marquette, Menominee, Oconto, Outagamie, Shawano, Sheboygan, Waupaca, Waushara, and Winnebago.

v  Students may enter art work in one of eight categories.  The categories are based on positive character traits and values.  In order to have art work accepted for judging, encourage students to clearly portray one character trait or one value.

v  Art work will be accepted for these eight categories: (a description of each category is included with this packet of materials)

 

                                        1.  Family / Belonging

                           2.  Honor

                           3.  Achievement / Success

                           4.  Integrity

                           5.  Compassion

                           6.  Self-Worth

                           7.  Freedom / Joy

                           8.  Generosity / Service

                         

v  Eight first place winners; eight second place winners; and eight honorable mention winners will be chosen by the nIc Foundation and business partners. There will be one first place winner; one second place winner; and one honorable mention winner in each of the eight categories.

v  First place winners in each category receive a $100 U.S. Savings Bond and a “nIc Just Be Nice…” T-Shirt. Second place winners in each category receive a $50 U.S. Savings Bond and a personal CD player.  Honorable mention winners in each category receive a “nIc Peace Bear.” ($25 value)

v  First place winners; second place winners; and honorable mention winners will have their art work submissions displayed in local gallery shows.

v  If no art work is submitted for a category, then no prizes will be awarded.

v  Accepted art contest mediums include crayon, charcoal, colored pencils, markers, acrylic paints, oil paints, water colors, and collage materials. Sculptures, clip art, and computer generated entries will not be accepted.

v  Art work submissions must be on white paper sized 11 X 14 for crayon, charcoal, colored pencil, and marker mediums. Art work submissions must be on white board sized 11 X 14 or 16 X 20 for acrylic paints, oil paints, water colors, and collage materials. Do not submit matted and / or framed art work.

v  Students sign art work by printing or writing their name legibly in the bottom right hand corner of their work. No other words or writing may be incorporated into the artwork.

v  A completed student entry form must accompany all art contest submissions. (please copy the two page student form for each student’s art contest entry) Attach student entry form with a paper clip to the student’s art work.

v  A parent and / or legal guardian signature is required on the student entry form acknowledging their child entering the art contest and the release of student information.

v  The name and signature of the sponsoring teacher plus the school email address and telephone number is required on the student entry form.

v  Students are required to complete three areas on the entry form:  1) category of art work  2) in own words, tell about the art work  and 3) sign own name

v  Entries not following the rules set forth will not be judged.

v  Art submissions will be judged by the nIc Foundation and representative Business Partners.  Art work will be judged on creativity, originality, adherence to theme, portrayal of one of the eight stated character traits and values, use of color and texture, and the artist’s written response to feelings and emotions portrayed in the art work. ( a sample scoring rubric is included in this packet)

v  The art contest is open from December 1, 2008 through February 20, 2009.  Art submissions are due to the nIc Foundation on or before the close of the day on February 20, 2009.

v  All entries submitted become property of the nIc Foundation and will not be returned.  Submission of the entry form for the “Building Character Through Art” contest shall be deemed as acceptance of all contest rules and shall constitute assignment to the nIc Foundation any and all right, title, and interest in and to the Artwork, including all copyrights, all publishing rights, and all rights to reproduce, and otherwise use the Artwork in any and all formats or media.

v  Winners will be notified at their respective schools on or before April 17, 2009.  Awards will be presented by the nIc Foundation during the week of May 18, 2009.
