DeRolf, Shane. (1977). The Crayon Box that Talked. Chicago: Harcourt.
Art Connection: use of color to create an original piece
Positive Character Traits & Values: community; cooperation; synergy; art / beauty; uniqueness
This short story demonstrates a valuable lesson about community and cooperation. When all the crayons in the crayon box began to argue and complain, something had to be done. A little girl helps the talking box of crayons see that we have uniqueness in ourselves; but, together as a team, we can accomplish great things. When all of the crayons work together, they create a beautiful picture representative of themselves.
In practicing community and cooperation, children are encouraged to work together in pairs to create a picture of art / beauty. Here are a few guidelines for students to follow:
- Students must work with their partner to create their piece of artwork
- All the colors of the crayon box must be used in the artwork
- Both students sign their name to the artwork
- Both students share their artwork with the rest of the class
The song “All Work Together” by Woody Guthrie (Folkways Music Publishers, Inc., 1963) tells the story that if “we all work together, it won’t take so very long” to get the chores done “with a wiggle and giggle and a google and a goggle…” The song’s chorus / refrain offers a fun play on words for children to say and sing.
