The Top 10 List of Non-Violent Video Games

The nIc Foundation and Clintonville Public Schools in Clintonville, Wisconsin, collaborated on a special project reviewing, analyzing, and recommending video games that are violence free.  The project goal:  to develop a recommended list of the Top 10 Non-Violent Video Games and to share this information nation-wide.

First, students in grades K-12 reviewed and analyzed video games utilizing both data analysis and rubric generated documents.  Students looked for skills that are addressed in the video games:  following multi-step directions; vocabulary knowledge and acquisition; reading comprehension abilities; math reasoning skills; problem solving strategies; decoding skills; decision making processes; and geographical / mapping skills.  Students also provided narrative support in determining what is “fun” about the game; a summary of the goal / task of the game; and why the game should be included on the Top 10 List.  Students were also able to provide personal comments.

Next, all video games were reviewed and analyzed again by a select team of students using a scoring rubric to assure that recommendations matched the criteria of a “non-violent” video game.  Student reviewers also looked at cost, user friendliness, accessibility, game rating, learning skills, and written narrative responses.

Then, the Clintonville Public School counselors team of Jody Lehman, Patricia Schley, and

Jennifer Voecks, studied the collected data and reviewed all student recommendations and comments.  The school counselors then put together their recommended list of 15-18 non-violent video games based on student input.

Finally, a panel of reviewers with the nIc Foundation had the opportunity to review all the gathered data and information and to add their comments and suggestions.  The end result:
