5 Quick Parent Tips for Purchasing Video Games

by the nIc Foundation

  1. Learn how to use the electronic devices that your children use. (Your children will be proud to show you how everything works!) Remember how we use to keep up with the “Jones?”  Now, we are keeping up with the kids…
  2. Read, search, investigate, and seek information about video games before purchasing. Know that children do not always understand the difference between reality and fantasy---even though we may think they do. Sales personnel that are gamers will be able to answer your questions; show you the video game components; and even demonstrate / play the game with you.
  3. Even though the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rates a program as “E” for everyone, know that there may be “content descriptors” for the game including 6 qualifiers for “violence.” (cartoon violence, fantasy violence, intense violence, mild violence, sexual violence, and violence)
  4. Be aware of video games that can take the player on line to compete against other players across the country. Some games encourage players to create their own characters and to play competitively doing whatever possible to be the winner. You will not know the “other person” behind the character.
  5. Keep the lines of communication open.  Make a point everyday to spend quality “talking time” with your child.  When something affects our children, we want to know about it in order to keep our children safe.
