Stopping Crime & Violence in Our Rural Communities

The “Stopping Crime & Violence in Our Rural Communities” initiative sponsored by the nIc Foundation, Inc. occurs mid-April each year in conjunction with the recognition of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week.  The event is free to the public and encourages residents living and / or working in rural communities to participate in this educational learning experience.  The event features an Educational Fair providing information and resources about victim rights; crime prevention; community resources; anti-bullying; character education; family unity; youth services; and home safety.  There is also a children’s booth with a special peace making to do project.  Children can meet and greet Smokey the Bear (fire safety), Eddie the Eagle (Gun Safety), and McGruff the Dog (crime fighting safety).

The event also includes a candle lighting ceremony with expert keynote speakers addressing crime and violence prevention; victim and witness stories and statements; choral tribute; children’s drama presentation; the lighting of candles for all victims of crime and violence; and words of hope. Lighted luminaries guide event attendees as they leave the ceremony.

Participants in the Informational Fair and the Candle Lighting Ceremony include representatives from the Police and Sherriff Departments; District Attorneys, Judges, Victim Rights Coordinators, and Lawyers; Probation and Parole and Office of Justice;  Local and State Representatives and Senators; County Social Service Organizations; Local Clergy; Township, Village, and City Officers; Crime Victims and Witnesses; and non-profit community organizations.

Prior to the recognition of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week and the Stopping Crime & Violence in Our Rural Communities event, children and youth groups prepare 3500 votive candles with a message of “lighting a candle for all victims of crime and violence” that are distributed free to patrons at various public facilities and area businesses.  Children and youth also prepare 3000 bags of seed with a message of “planting the seeds of peace” that are also distributed free to the public.
