Spinelli, Jerry.  (1991). There’s a Girl in My Hammerlock.  NY: Simon & Schuster.

Spinelli’s book, There’s a Girl in My Hammerlock, addresses some prevailing preconceptions about sex roles in an athletic program.  The scene is a junior high school where female student Maisie goes out for wrestling instead of cheerleading. Maisie asks herself the question:  “Why couldn’t I just be a nice, normal girl?”

Parents are encouraged to talk to their child about stereotyping and perceived sex roles.  The conversation will lead to parents encouraging their child / children to grow up to be whatever he / she wants to be.  Ask your child, “Who is your role model?  Who is your hero?”  You will learn valuable information from your child.  This information will help you to model the positive character traits and values that you want to instill in your child.
