What is the “nIcvp4kids” project?
Project “nIcvp4kids” (nIc violence prevention for kids) is an after hours integrated character education program for community children in grades 1-4. The purpose of nIcvp4kids is to provide a safe, non-threatening, supervised, after hours learning environment where positive character traits and values are integrated into a fine arts / humanities curriculum.
Character education is the basis for the nIcvp4kids project. The goal is to help children develop and enhance core ethical values through courses in the areas of music, art, movement and dance, theatre, foreign language, and writing. The teaching of positive character traits and values is integrated into course work through the curriculum by modeling, guided practice, and practical application. Children develop and build strong personal skills in getting along with others.
All classes offered are tied to Wisconsin State Academic Standards. The standards contain stated expectations for children to accomplish at various grade levels through a variety of class work.
Courses are offered in three six week segments during the school year. Because each course offered during the six week period provides for the individual child’s success in learning, the minimum and maximum number of children accepted for a course is dependent upon several factors including course content; individualized instruction; group instruction; and class location. Classes meet one time per week for a six-week period of time. Each class is 90 minutes in duration. Children may participate in only one class for the six week period of time.
Learning is a partnership between family, school, and community. As part of service learning, children share their new learning experiences with the community through a variety of ways. Their class may choose to create a bulletin board display at a bank; create books for children to read at the doctor and dental offices; design posters for area businesses; post a gallery show at a public building such as the library; or participate in a performance at the senior center. As part of service learning, children are encouraged to give back to their community.
Currently, the Clintonville, Wisconsin community is the focus of the nIcvp4kids project.
